Recent News and Awards
Shawna's first novel, Into the Water, was awarded first place in the 2019 Pacific Northwest Writers Association literary contest. Shawna is seeking representation for the 80,000-word upmarket, contemporary novel that starts just hours before a 9.0 earthquake slices the Northwest, following Seattle artist Katya Strand-Saito and her young son through the wrecked city.
Shawna received an Honorable Mention in the 2021 Pen Parentis Writing Fellowship for New Parents competition for her short story "Making It"
In March, Shawna participated in a masked and distanced outdoor reading with other Seattle writers that began with a group sing-along to Billy Joel's Piano Man, and was punctuated by pounding rain. It was absolutely glorious.
